Root Cause #1
Luis: Most civil wars occur in relatively poor countries, and places where its status has for long been associated with involvement in violent conflict. The recruitment costs are also lower when the alternative means of income are low, in situations of under-unemployment and poverty. If people have no other primary means to ensure a lie sustaining income, the threshold for joining an army (be it government or rebel) is presumed to be low.
Denise: Poverty is an important root cause because many children join armed groups do to survival. The poverty could be so extreme to the point in where joining an armed group would give a child a meal or the family of this child would receive some kind of benefit. If these countries were economically stable I believe that families would feel the need to send their child to become a child soldier in order for him/her to receive a meal.
